The inspiration for this blog and my travels in general comes from this tattered old book.
The book was originally titled "Alle Wunder dieser Welt" and published in Germany by the author Roland Gööck in 1968. As far as I am aware it was never translated into English. The title means "All the Wonders of the World". Thus the name of this blog.
I loved looking through the Slovenian translation of this book as a child. To this day I can still vividly imagine some of the pictures of the wonderful places that are represented in the book.
As a little girl, I was most impressed by the beautiful pictures of the Taj Mahal. I always lingered on those pages, admiring the lovely colorful flowers. But the book contains many more treasures. There are the ancient wonders of the world such as the pyramids of Egypt, the Great wall of China, Machu Picchu and so on. There are modern wonders such as the Mont Blanc tunnel, the Panama canal and the Kennedy space center. The book was published in 1968, remember? There are prominent cities such as Rome, Istanbul and New York. Finally, there are the natural wonders such as the Victoria falls, the Grand Canyon and the Postojna caves. I was so proud that this Slovenian attraction was featured in the book. It was the only place I had actually visited at the time.
By now, I have been to many of the places listed in the book although I don't keep score. I don't travel so that I can tick off destinations on a list. I travel to discover, experience and learn from all the beautiful, mysterious places in the world.
If I get to visit all the places in the book during my lifetime, fine. And if I don't, that's fine too.
